The Last Frontier BBQ Throwdown is Alaska’s premier barbecue competition as well as the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. This event brings together pitmasters, backyard grillers, and BBQ enthusiasts to Eagle River, Alaska for an unforgettable celebration of smoked and grilled perfection.
As a sanctioned event by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) and the Steak Cookoff Association (SCA), this throwdown attracts top competitors and BBQ lovers from across the world. Whether cooking in any of the multiple competitions, judging or simply enjoying the festival, there’s something for everyone.
KCBS Registration
KCBS Master Series 4 Meat Contest – Competitors go head-to-head in four classic BBQ categories: chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket.
The winner earns the coveted title of Alaska State BBQ Champion, an automatic invite to compete in “The Jack” Jack Daniels World Championship, an invite to compete at the KCBS World Invitational and an invite to compete in the Memphis in May World Championship with a $250 credit towards entry fees! Trophies and Cash prizes will be awarded as well.
*ALL TEAMS THAT COMPETE WILL ALSO EARN A $100 CREDIT TOWARD THEIR ENTRY FEES FOR THE MEMPHIS IN MAY BBQ CHAMPIONSHIP CONTEST FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR!

SCA Steak Competition - AK State Championship
The SCA Steak Cookoff at the Last Frontier BBQ Throwdown is a fast-paced, high-stakes competition where competitors go head-to-head to cook the perfect ribeye. Sanctioned by the Steak Cookoff Association (SCA), competitors are judged on Appearance, Doneness, Texture, Taste and Overall Impression. With trophies, cash prizes and a GOLDEN TICKET on the line, this is the ultimate test for steak cooks.
Taco Ancillary Competition – AK State Championship
The Taco Ancillary Competition at the Last Frontier BBQ Throwdown is officially the Alaska State Championship, making it the ultimate battleground for taco mastery. Open to all styles and ingredients except dessert tacos, competitors can get creative with bold flavors, unique presentations, and expert execution. Whether traditional, fusion, or completely original, the best taco will earn the state championship title, a trophy with prize money, a GOLDEN TICKET and bragging rights as Alaska’s top taco!
Cocktail Ancillary Competition - AK State Championship
The Cocktail Ancillary Competition at the Last Frontier BBQ Showdown invites competitors to craft their best cocktail creations. Using a variety of spirits and ingredients, participants will be judged on creativity, flavor balance, and presentation. It’s the perfect opportunity to showcase mixology skills and add a refreshing twist to the BBQ competition! (complete rules will be updated at a later date)
Youth BBQ AK State Championship
The Youth BBQ Competition at the Last Frontier BBQ Throwdown is the Alaska State Championship for young aspiring food sport athletes. This special event invites kids and teens ages 6-17 to step up to the grill and showcase their skills in preparing HAMBURGERS. They will be competing in three different age brackets (6-10), (11-13) and (14-17). Participants will be judged on their cooking techniques, through Appearance, Taste, Creativity and Execution. This will give them the chance to compete for the title of Alaska Youth BBQ Champion and an invite to compete at the SCA World Championship. It’s an exciting and inspiring opportunity for the next generation of pitmasters!

The Great Alaskan Yak-Off
The Great Alaskan Yak-Off is a unique, SCA-sanctioned competition at the Last Frontier BBQ Throwdown, featuring YAK MEAT. This meat is sourced from a local Alaskan Yak ranch. This exciting event challenges competitors to cook and showcase their best yak dishes using ground Yak meat. Entries will be judged on Appearance, Creativity, Taste and Execution. Cooks will register and pay through the Steak Cookoff Association (SCA)WEBSITE. This contest is a rare opportunity to work with this premium Alaskan sourced meat and compete for top honors in a truly one-of-a-kind competition.
The winner will earn the official title of “AK YAK-OFF CHAMP”!
They will also win a trophy with cash as well as receive a GOLDEN TICKET to compete in the SCA World Ancillary Championship
